Debrief your first week.

I like my ideas and I believe I can create a great piece by getting my ideas across. This idea of showing the philosophies of Existentialism and Nihilism are extremely fascinating. The most important thing I want to make sure I do is respect the two philosophies. I do not want to question why the schools of thought are the way they are in means of truth. My goal is to simply express the two sides. I slightly would like to incorporate theater of cruelty into this piece in terms of lighting etc. but I am not sure if I will. I am not intrigued by "simple lighting", that is simple white light, and I want to use barley any lighting and maybe add some red to this. Possibly some dark blue also? To add depth to the scene, since the stage size will be very small. The small stage size will be very beneficial in creating an intimacy. This intimacy is for the actors. The audience can still feel isolated. The audience should truly feel as though there is a glass box between them and the actors. They are watching two schools of thought, and that is all. They may relate, but they shouldn't feel as though they really know the people on stage. There needs to be added structure to this piece which I am continuing to work on. Some of the structure comes from blocking out what happens within the 12 minute performance. This includes silence of 2-3 minutes, a phone call, attire being put on, playing with blocks, newton's cradle. I need to sort these into a specific order and add time amounts to all of these things. I feel as though these need to be acted out before I can truly put a time on them, as I believe these things (though structured) should still feel natural. Newton's Cradle will work as a Sisyphus comparison, and highlight that between both Nihilism and Existentialism there is a constant back and forth equating to no meaning. The Existentialist will also try building with blocks and eventually knock them down by accident highlighting Sisyphus. I do want to do something at that moment that highlights the nihilist as well, but I haven’t quite figured out what yet.
